Why Whitening Toothpastes Can Damage Tooth Enamel – And How to Prevent It

Many people desire white teeth and reach for whitening toothpastes to achieve them. However, what many don't know is that these products can damage tooth enamel and, in the long run, even have the opposite effect. Here you can find out how to ensure healthy and white teeth.

How do whitening products work?

Whitening toothpastes usually work with very coarse abrasive particles. These remove deposits such as coffee, tea, or smoker's stains, which sounds positive at first. The teeth appear brighter and cleaner. But over time, the tooth enamel becomes thinner and thinner. This has two unpleasant consequences:

  1. Tooth Sensitivity: Thinner enamel makes teeth more sensitive to cold, heat, or sweet foods.
  2. Yellowish Tint: Beneath the enamel lies the dentin, which is naturally yellowish. If the enamel becomes too thin, this dentin shines through – and the teeth suddenly appear yellower, even though whitening products were supposedly used. And the worst part: this change is irreversible.

Why are the particles so coarse?

The coarse abrasive particles in whitening toothpastes are necessary to be effective despite the many additives they contain, such as glycerin, water, foaming agents, and preservatives. It's comparable to an exfoliant: the more cream you add, the less you feel the granules. To still achieve a visible result, coarser particles are used, but these also attack the tooth enamel.

The gentle alternative

However, there is a gentle alternative: teethlovers organic Toothpowder. Despite the super fine particles, the Toothpowder can remove deposits much more effectively than toothpaste. Through direct contact of the powder with saliva, its effect unfolds immediately, effectively and visibly removing superficial discolorations caused by coffee, tea, wine, and smoking. At the same time, the tooth enamel is actively remineralized by saliva, which deposits minerals, and by hydroxyapatite, the main component of tooth enamel – for healthy and white teeth naturally. If deeper discolorations due to years of smoking or medication need to be treated, professional bleaching in a dental practice is required. Therefore, anyone who wants long-term healthy and radiantly white teeth should opt for gentle products and promote the natural regeneration process of tooth enamel instead of destroying it.
